Women's Shoe Shopping Tips

Always check our Women's Shoes Tips & Tricks before buying new shoes...

Mind The Gap! Also when buying new shoes...

When buying new shoes, there should be a gap (toe space) of approximately 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch (1,25 cm to 2 cm) between your longest toe and the shoe tip (end of the shoe). Do not allow toe space less than 1/4 inches (0,6 cm). You should always be able to wiggle your toes (all of them!)

Try shoes on in the evening

Be aware of the fact that the feet swell during the day. Therefore, you should always try on new shoes in the evening/ late afternoon. Many women also notice that their feet swell a bit during their menstrual period and a few days prior to their period. If this applies to you, those days are ideal for trying new shoes (to make sure the shoes will fit next time your feet swell during the period.)

Start with your larger foot

Start trying shoes with your larger foot (then you don't need to try both shoes if the first one doesn't fit). The larger foot is usually the opposite from the hand you write with. I.e. for right-handed persons, the left foot will usually be the larger.

Always "Test Walk" the shoes!

Always try to walk with the new shoes on in store, then you will get a better impression of their size and fit.

Heel slippage

Does the heel slip when you walk? Do not buy the shoes - they will cause you pain!

Remember socks when trying shoes!

Always try shoes with the same type of socks that you intend to use in the shoes. Try winter shoes with thicker winter socks, and summer shoes with thin summer socks.

Never accept "almost right sized shoes"

Is the size you are looking for out of stock? Never buy a "slightly to small size", just to hope the pair of shoes will fit after a "breaking in period". It will not happen!

Buy shoes online

The best advise to get a new pair of shoes that will fit perfectly, is to go to a shoe store and try the shoes on. But you want to shop your shoes Online, right? We understand. It's a bit of a risky business, but we will help you minimizing the risk of Online shoe shopping with our advises as found below...

Measure your shoe size (see our Shoe Size Measure Guide to make sure you do it the right way.) Use this size in combination with examining your old shoes (see below) when ordering new shoes.

- Which shoe brand are you shopping for? Shoe sizing can often vary a bit between different shoe brands. Check if you already got a pair of shoes from the same brand. If you do, it is likely to believe that you will need the same size in the new pair of shoes.

- Which shoe type are you shopping for? Sneakers? Boots? Sandals? Or maybe party shoes? Shoe sizing can often vary slightly between different shoe styles. Maybe you are a size 6 in sneakers, but always need to go up to i.e. size 6 1/2 in party shoes? Have a look at the size in old shoes of same kind (i.e. trainers, sandals, party shoes etc.) as you are shopping for. Check more pairs to get a fair impression.

- Which socks will you wear in your new shoes? Accommodate to wear i.e. thick socks in winter shoes. This might require 1/4 or 1/2 US size larger shoes.

- Try the shoes on in your local store and buy them Online! Is it rude? Not all all! Competition is a health sign - also in the shoe business. You might tell your local retailer that you have seen the shoes cheaper Online - and give her/him the opportunity to match this price. That's fair!

Find your shoe size by measuring
It is important to know your shoe size when shopping shoes (both in the local shoe store and Online). Then trying shoes go faster, and it is also more likely you will find a pair of new shoes that fits perfectly when shopping shoes Online.
